Robinowich_Matthew Carther

I chose Matthew Carter because he is one of the classic, all time greats who has been able to evolve with technology. You see his work everyday even though you may not realize it. He has created the fonts used today for publications such as Time, Washington Post, New York Times, Boston Globe, Wired, Newsweek, and more. Some of his most popular typefaces are Veranda and Georgia.

Smith_Crouwel

Wim Crouwel is a Dutch typographer and graphic designer. He is one of the founders of Total Identity. His typefaces include New Alphabet, Fodor, and Gridnik. Later in his career he taught at various design schools. His work is sharp, grid-based, and rooted in the internatonal typographic style.

What really fascinates me about Wim and other designers of his time is that they had to deal with the beginnings of a major, global shift from traditional media to computers. It's also fun to see a type designer who tends to favor aesthetics over readability.

Dale_ Matthew Carter

Matthew Carter is a famous type designer who started working with punch cut technology, but still proves himself relevant with modern type design technology. He is famous for making font families like Verdana and Georgia.

Couvillion: Jessica Hische

Jessica Hische is a designer from Brooklyn who decided to start a project called The Daily Drop Cap where she literally makes a drop cap each day.

Specializes in logo, package, restaurant, and book design. She has received Gold and Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators and New York Art Directors Club.

For my video I chose an interview with the French graphic designer Philippe Apeloig. He is well known for his posters and many of them can be found in MOMA. He has his own studio in Paris, France called "Apeloig." In the video he explains why he designed his posters the way he did. He also explains what inspires him, which I think is something we should consider as well.

I chose this video of Philippe Apeloig because I really enjoyed his typography poster designs. I love how he made type into beautiful art pieces. He was born in Paris and is graphic designer who has a serious passion for typography.

Leal_Michael Riley

I chose this Michael Riley film because I think people overlook the art or the work that goes into the intro to movies often and in all reality it is a very important part of the movie. People can always tell exactly what movie they are watching just by the intro. When the animation and titling is interesting it draws the viewer in for the movie and play a big role in the success of movies with little credit to the hard work that is put into it.

Shine - Lawrence Weiner

Lawrence Weiner was a central person in the formation of conceptual art in the 1960s. He is famous for his works of typographic texts and creating gestures. In the 60s he spent 6 years making explosions in the California landscape to create craters as individual sculptures.

Gunter, Paula Scher

Paula Scher is an American graphic designer. She is known for illustrating with type in her designs, whether they be in posters or architecture. She is also well-known as the designer of the citi bank logo. She currently is a partner at the New York office of Pentagram, a prestigious independent design consultancy with offices also in Austin, London and Berlin.

I love this TED talk by Paula Scher because she makes it clear that no matter how successful she is, she never ceases to learn.

In this blog assignment you will find a video interview with a designer and post it up on the blog. Hi I am Daniela and I'm originally from Odessa, TX but have lived in the Austin area for about 7 years. After I finished my basics at Austin Community College, I transferred to Texas State as a Nursing Major. After a semester's worth of chemistry I decided nursing was not what I wanted to do. I had always enjoyed art classes and art competitions in high school and realized that I wanted a more creative career. I made the switch to Communication Design and I love it. My favorite font would have to be Rockwell. I like the roundedness of the letters and the impact it has on a design. It instantly grabs my attention with its classic, sharp look that can be used in many situations.

I'm Michele! I'm from Arlington, Texas. I'm a ComDes major and I have no idea what I want to do when I graduate. I chose Times or Times New Roman because its simple and classic. You can't really go wrong with that.

Hey my name is Nabil and I'm from Sugar Land, Texas. I chose Memphis because I did a project with it recently and it worked well. I was in the communication design program at North Texas for a couple of years but I started attending Texas State last semester.

Armas-Bookman Old Style

I'm Azalia, pronounced like the flower Azalea, in case that helps anyone. I'm originally from Orange County, California, and have moved a few times and have now been in Texas for about eight years now. So far I'm liking this major but was also strongly considering changing my major to Architecture just because I loved the idea of creating or modifying a building that could be used and enjoyed by people. I, however, have decided to stick to Com Des because I have found that its also quite gratifying to finish a project and see people react to it, whether positive or negative...of course positive is always nicer.
For my favorite font, I chose Bookman Old Style because its simple but still has some character in it with its. I see almost as a modern version of a typewriter's font (eventhough the font title is has "Old Style" in it) . The letters all flow together nicely and is very legible and isn't distracting unlike some of the hard jagged edges that a regular typewriter would create.
