Type: Sample Art

I was talking to Jeremy Honea this morning about the font Tungsten, a smart little font designed by Hoefler & Frere-Jones (which today we learned is called a type foundry!). It reminded me of an equally smart, and sweet, article I found about the thought process behind designing sample art for new type faces. The sample art by H&FJ is really neat, so I encourage the class to explore their website and see what real and current type looks like. It puts DaFont to shame, shame, shame!

Except for the intro, the article is written by the designer himself.

New Fonts: A Graphic Designer's Perspective

Webber - Denmark

I am Gloria M. Webber, but I go by middle name, Marie. I am a senior Mass Comm - Electronic Media major with two minors in Writing and Comm Des. I just finished an Christmas break internship at KLDO Univision, which a Spanish speaking news station in my hometown in Laredo. I was a production assistant and helped record the weather, new briefs and sports segments. I hope to go back in the summer. My main interests are mostly television production and animation. I also like comic books/graphic novels, art, and animation. I have also worked as a free lance graphic designer. I am currently an intern at the athletic department. I usually work camera 2 at the volleyball and basketball games

I chose Denmark as my favorite font because it bold, clean, and works best as a headline. When I make posters or fliers, it is my go to font.

Karissa Cardoza - Futura

My name is Karissa Cardoza, and I am originally from up and down California, and have settled in Austin for the time being. I am currently a junior, and i am planning on double majoring in ComDes and photography. I am also currently a graphic design intern for a film production studio in east Austin.

I really can't pick my fav font, though I usually favor Sans Serif fonts. One that i have always appreciated is Futura. I like its simplicity and ease of read, but there is a certain aesthetic about it that separates it from the other sans serif fonts.

Reuben - Snell Roundhand

Hi my is Reuben Lopez I'm from Temple, Texas. This is my second semester here at Texas State. I transfered from Temple College were i got my associates in art. I'm 24 years old I like drawing and playing sports. After i get my bachelors degree in communication design I want to pursue a masters degree in animation.

I've always liked fonts such as Snell Roundhand. I like them for their smooth rhythmical curves and they always give off a fancy persona to whatever the fonts applied to.

Ashlea & Eurostile

I'm Ashlea! I'm from Austin! I got my associates from ACC in 2008 and then took a year off from school to work at AMD on a website migration project. Now I'm back to school and working on a communication design degree.

I love Eurostile! Its clean with a hint of curvy, like technology garnished with just a touch of organic.

Larson- Helvetica

I'm Katie Larson. I'm from Lewisville (North Dallas). I enjoy life even the struggles and especially the challenges. I'm pumped about this class and blogging...I've wanted to do it for a while now just haven't made time to set it all up.

I'm choosing Helvetica because it seems safe. However, I have MUCH to learn about typeography and I'm sure I'll have a better/more opinionated answer later in the semester.

SALAS Caslon

Hi! My name is Guadalupe, but I go by Lupita. My major is Communication Design. I got an Associates degree in Graphic Design at Austin Community College. I’m from Mexico and have lived in Austin for ten years. I love graphic design. Also I like to draw and play soccer.

One of my favorite typeface Caslon because I think it is beautiful serif font. It's readable, clean, and has great variety of letter shapes.

Berry, dafont.com

Hello my name is Chris Berry and yes I realize choose an entire website for my go to font. Reason being, I use what ever font is necessary, and dafont.com delievers. Its a designers paradise, it has multiple categories of fonts ranging from Sci-fi to Graffiti; it even has a variety of Serif to San Serifs fonts. Also you can test the font before downloading, oh and did i mention its all free. So for now I'm Chris, and i use dafont.com

Gesch, Shannon-Cooper Black

Hello, I am junior by 1 pt, so I like to think of myself as a senior here at Texas State. I'm from a town called Katy. I love making fashion magazine covers. I've been doing it for fun all my life. Otherwise I love designing anything from rooms, cooking, painting, sculpture, photoshop, photography, scrapbooking, I love art, and I love life.

Typography and kerning are something I take a lot of time with. I will spend forever to choose the perfect font and spacing. It's definatly key to magazine covers. I choose Cooper black because I am enticed by its bold curves. However, a variety of fonts are necessary to express different messages. Cooper is really bold and I like to use it because it catches my eye.

Brimer, Adobe Ming Std

I'm Melissa Brimer and I'm from a city by the sea. I am a comdes major and a masscom minor. I think the world in which we reside is fascinating, so I'm quite the observer. I am also stoked for the sixth season of Lost. :]

I chose Adobe Ming because I like the classic typewriter feel it has but it's not too bold and spacey like the American Typewriter font. It is neat and simple yet still visually appealing.

Murray - imprint mt shadow

Patrick Murray. I commute from Austin, CommDes major. I am a record collector for over 10 years now and am fascinated with Japanese culture and tattoos. Been a profesional Dj in Austin for 6+ years now (under the name Hobo D), specifying in funk, soul, rnb 1960s era. I chose imprint mt shadow because it has a glare effect I find interesting. Planning on learning a good bit from this class, as i have not really delved into fonts yet.

Craft, Agency FB

Hello out there,

My name's Rex Craft, I'm currently a Junior here at Texas State for ComDes. I am currently working for the Texas State University Theatre and Dance as the Graphic Designer for some of the productions going on.

My favorite font at the current time has to be Agency FB. I'm usually a messy font fan, but there is something about the structure of Agency that has grabbed my attention. I love the way my eyes move through the font, and as I've seen from previous bloggers, I can agree that the structure and solidity of the font create a very even, flowing nature for whatever it's attached to.

Ryan Considine: Archer

My name is Ryan Considine.
I like long walks on the beach.
My favorite font is currently Archer by Hoefler & Frere-Jones.

Switzer, Futura Std

Dear Kern That!,

I'm Mark Switzer. I hail from the small village of Fredericksburg, Texas. I'm currently a Junior at Texas State and working towards my BFA Comm. Des.

My favorite font as of late is Futura Std.

I like Futura's old aesthetic and ease of reading.

Stacy, Fairfax Station

Hey everyone, my name is Kelly Stacy I'm from Kingwood (right outside of Houston) Im a Comm Dess major and I chose the font Fairfax Station. I am very new to typography so I honestly do not have a favorite type, but I do however like this particular font. I chose this font because I like how it has both a curvy and straight appearance. It just caught my eye. I am very excited to learn everything I can about typography.

GAINES- Baskerville

My name is Brittany Gaines, Im a junior at Texas State and a Com Des major with a business minor. Im from Houston, more specifically Kingwood. I never had a desire to do anything with art until my senior year of high school when i couldn't get into a class and was put into an intro art class instead. I changed my major from psychology to com des the first semester of my freshman year. I have a miniture schnauzer named Liam who is a handful and love sushi. There is a ton I need to learn about typography so this class should be interesting and a lot of fun.

I chose Baskerville, I like the classic feel of it. I like for things to be neat and organized and I feel this font achieves that.

Kuehne- American Typewriter

Hello, I'm Katherine Kuehne and I'm a Junior and a Communication Design major. Admittedly typography isn't my favorite part of graphic design but I still can appreciate a well used font. I'm more interested in illustrations. Ideally I'd like to be a Storyboard Artist someday, probably for advertisements.

American Typewriter is one of my favorite fonts to use, mostly as a header. I'm not sure why I like it so much but I do. I'm also a fan of the classic Helvetica. I just love it's simplicity.

Murray - imprint mt shadow

Patrick Murray. I commute from Austin, CommDes major. I am a record collector for over 10 years now and am fascinated with Japanese culture and tattoos. Been a profesional Dj in Austin for 6+ years now, specifying in funk, soul, rnb 1960s era. I chose imprint mt shadow because it has a glare effect I find interesting. Planning on learning a good bit from this class, as i have not really delved into fonts yet.

Perry- Edwardian Script

Hey, I'm Jennifer. I'm a sophomore at Texas State, majoring in graphic design. I was born in Houston, Tx. I've moved to almost every major city in Texas, except Dallas. Now I live in a small town north of San Antonio; Boerne. My life consists of my family, friends, watching my weekly shows, and waiting to get a puppy in the fall. I love everything about being outside, and being surrounded by my friends and family.

I do not know that much about Typography, although if I had to choose a favorite font I chose Edwardian Script because I love the elegance of the type. The swirls give it that elegant feel that I gravitate to most often. I write in cursive normally when I take notes, so anything that has that cursive feel is a font that I will like.

Welch - LiSong Pro

Hi, My name is Robin. I am a junior this year and it is my third semester at Texas State. I have lived in Austin for almost six years and absolutely love it. Some of my favorite activities include (learning how to) snowboard and golf, watching football, hanging out with my cat, Spencer, and playing with my dog, Remi. I used to run a lot, but about six months ago I somehow managed to get a "pre-dislocated joint" in my toe, and have yet to find a cure. You may see me walk into class with a surgical boot on sometimes when my foot is having a bad day.
Coming into this class, I do not currently have a favorite font. After looking through the font book, as of right now, I really like LiSong Pro. It is the font that stood out the most to me. Like quickly flipping through the pages of a book and you suddenly stop on one page to take a closer look because the pictures is so interesting or pleasing to the eye. my favorite letter from the LiSong Pro font is Q, it is also my middle initial. I like how every letter has the ability to stand on it's own.
i hope to gain a lot more knowledge in typography this semester! I am very excited!

Martinez, Futura

Hi,

My name is Kristen Martinez. I am currently a sophomore at Texas State. I've known since my sophomore year in high school what I wanted to major in when I went to college, and it just so happened that Texas State was one of the best programs out there. Also the inspiration of some intensely amazing Target, Sprite, and Nike commercials. Good Stuff...

I like Futura at the moment because it has a modern look to it, and is easy on the eyes. A runner up typeface would have to be Interstate. My opinion much like my clothes change often though so this is in the moment.

Babson - Herculanum

Hi all,
My name is Diana Babson. I am a junior (finally) and a Communication Design major. I moved to Texas three years ago from Massachusetts, try saying that three times fast. I love Texas and I never want to leave! I am a very happy person and I am alwasy smiling. I like to play and try any sport my new hobby is Rock Wall Climbing at the rec center! I am interested in a lot of things so I have no idea what I want to do with my major yet!

I chose Herculanum because I am Greek and I love everything Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and anything from the ancient world. It reminds me of my background and I used it on my logo for Dawn's class in comm des 1.

Hi Charlie and Taylor!!!!

West Times with Italics

Hello strange new wonderful world of type,
My name is Maria West. I don't really go by that name at home I usually go by Isabel (my middle name). That is because my family named just about all my sisters "Maria". My mothers name is Maria V. , My older sisters name is Maria B., even my step sister's name is Maria S! We all use Maria as our work names so when we all lived together and somebody called for 'Maria' at home it is always followed by "Which one?" which really confused the caller.
I chose Times with italics because this type is what I am most familiar with. Italics just makes it have sprinkles on top. I've worked in the military and as a personal assistant - all those memos, SOPs, request for equipment- all have to be done in a professional type which means Times 12 (size).
Having restrictions to what you can use everyday kinda makes you a little crazy when it comes to type. I find when I'm allowed to use whatever I want I become a little indecisive.....it's kinda like having vanilla ice cream your whole life then you find out whoa! There's more than one flavor? and What? You can add toppings? So I hope that this class will help me curb that kid on candy craze and settle me down so that I can CHOOSE type rather than gorge myself on it and choose too many.

JAMES - perpetua

Hello, I am Charlie James and I decided on perpetua... as silly as it sounds it has the nicest "c" out of the fonts, in my opinion, which really is not important for anything more than spelling my name.

To be honest there is -a lot- for me to learn about typography, and design in general for that matter. Before switching into the design program I was planning on just teaching art, the appeal of summers and weekends off was hard to resist, but, thanks to student teaching, I realized that dealing with arrogant highschoolers wasn't worth the any amount of months off. In hindsight I feel a bit bad, because I was definitely one of those kids when I was in high-school art...

I have lived in Fort Worth all my life, and have been painting and drawing just as long. Hopefully there will be some ability to apply those two passions into design, if not they can remain hobbies with playing guitar and being the master of bad jokes.

Simmons, futura and garamond

Hey, I'm Mark. I have been around design for my whole life. I transfered to Texas State as a senior from Arizona State to complete my degree in graphic design. Both schools are fantastic for design, I swear.

I chose Futura and Garamond. I like Futura's letterforms. Garamond is a nice serif font and appealing...like me!

Thomas - Bodoni Poster Italic

Hello!

I'm Amanda Thomas. This is my first semester at Texas State, so if I'm seen on campus looking bewildered, I have an excuse to be so. I have degree from UT Austin in advertising where I specialized in creative advertising. In my last semester, I decided to switch over to design; it's been wonderful ever since. Other than loving and nerding out on design, I have a three-legged cat named Isis, and I recently began a record collection. If anyone has an original of Television's, Marquee Moon, let me know!

And, finally, my preferred font is Bodoni Poster Italic. It can be a sophisticated typeface and also a playful one. I hardly love anything more than a chubby serif, especially if it's kerned nicely. Exclamation points are the best when set in Bodoni Poster Italic.

Korczynski - Verdana

Hello world, my name is Adrien Hope Korczynski and I'm a Com Des/Photo major. I currently chose Verdana for its simplicity and rounded nature, though usually I pick and choose various fonts for whatever mood I'm in. I loooveeeeee fonts :D

Wilson- UNIVERS

Hi, my name is Hannah. I have been in San Marcos for most of my life. I have moved and come back a few times, so this last time I decided to go back to school. I am a junior, with a double major in Com Des and Metals. I run a zoo at my house with 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 3 frogs. It's pretty much crazy! I like making jewelry and doing yoga. I am a big dork, and ridiculously excited about school!

I chose UNIVERS because it's missing the "e" at the end.... and its awesome, simple and I have used it quite a bit!

MARASIGAN garamond

My name is Victorio Marasigan. I am a double major, in comm des and photography (DPI). I believe in Jesus. I write music. I'm half filipino.

I chose Garamond because it's a clean font and it's pretty diverse.

Englert-Mona Lisa

Hello, my name is Taylor Englert. I am a Junior at Texas State and my major is Communication Design. I like the typography side of com des so this should be a good class. My hobbies consist of riding BMX everyday and playing drums in a band called Say Say Say. If you ever wanna talk about music I'll be there.

I chose Mona Lisa because the elongated text has a lot of character. another is courier. something about that classic typewriter font is so neat and original.

BELCHER - desdemona

My name is Leanne Belcher. Don't laugh. I'm from Manchester, England and yes, I do support Manchester United. My major is communication design and I am going to try to minor in Spanish, we'll see how that goes. I like playing soccer and I play the piano.
I chose Desdemona. I don't really know how to explain the things I like about it, but I like how it looks. I think it's cool because it's the font Led Zeppelin used.
Thank you for your time :)

KLINGAMAN - Edwardian Script

Hi, my name is Matt Klingaman. I'm currently a Junior at Texas State University. I'm planning on majoring in advertising with a minor in graphic design. All the ARTF & ARTC classes I've taken so far have been extremely rewarding and have improved my design skills alot. I look forward to this class and working with type. I like wakeboarding, playing guitar, listening to music, and hangin out with friends. A few of my favorite bands are Neutral Milk Hotel, Brand New, and Manchester Orchestra. When I graduate, I'd love to work in Austin. One long-term goal I have would be to start my own company.

I chose Edwardian Script because it's a very interesting font and has a really classic quality to it while still maintaining readability.

Tekton Pro, Hamm

Hey people, I am Lindsey Hamm, from Houston, Texas. I'm a Junior at Texas State, I am Majoring in Advertising and working on my Minor in Communications Design. I just recently went to Chicago with the Advertising Ad Club, where we toured bad ass ad agencies and networked. I have a Border Collie X, her name is Charlie, and she is the coolest dog EVER! Lastly, I am about to complete my second 1/2 marathon on Feb. 14, 2010! YAYA!

I chose this font because it gives off a sarcastic feel and mood to it. Ha Ha.
It brings me joy to my life, hopefully, you guys feel this way too.

Later,
Hamm

DIX - Bell MT

My name is Mary Ann Dix, I go by Mary Ann. I picked Bell MT because its very simple and clear serif font with a little personality. I am a senior ++ and this is my 2nd thesis semester in Metals. I grew up here in San Marcos.

COOK-Zapfino

My name is Tara Cook. I am a communication design and painting major and plan on getting my masters someday. I'm from Corpus Christi and enjoy the beach. I have always loved art and cannot see myself doing anything other than something in the art world.

I chose Zapfino because it is elegant. It was one of the more interesting fonts I saw while scrolling through fontbook. It is unique and that is how I see myself.

Clare, Hobo Std

Hola! My name is Megan Clare and my major is Communication Design. I want to use it to focus on animation and possibly work for Disney one day. I'm still planning on taking some architecture classes because I love to design houses. I also love drawing, reading and watching lots of movies. The font I picked was Hobo Std. I like it because it's fun and bold and I like to look at something thats more interesting than just Times Roman or Arial.

Serrano-Mendoza Burton's Nightmare

Hi, I'm Jeannette and I am a Comm-Des major. I'm from a small town on the outskirts of San Antonio. I chose Burton's Nightmare because I really like The Nightmare Before Christmas movie and the spooky concept of it.

CAROLINO - Courier New

Greetings, my name is Alan Carolino & I'm a Communication Design major. Of all the programs that we've used throughout the intro classes, I find that I have the most fun when using Adobe Illustrator.

A few interests of mine are guitars, tattoos, Pixar movies, tech gadgets, & YouTube.

I chose Courier New because it's so clear & easy to read. It's the default font for many things & I used to hate looking at it, but I suppose it has grown on me throughout the years & now prefer it over others. Who would've thunk it?

GARCIA Trade Gothic

Hello all, my name is Jorge J. Garcia Jr. I am a Comm. Design major, returning to school after almost ten years. I have worked in the graphic design and printing fields for 9 years and am coming back to school to sharpen my skills and hopefully learn some new tricks.

One of my favorite fonts to use is Trade Gothic. It is a strong and sleek typeface that can be both simple and complex all at the same time. Good stuff!

Przybiski- Futura

Hi! My name is Rachel Przybiski. I am an Advertising major and an Art and Design minor. I like reading, photography, and interior design. I'm a huge hockey fan, and I love the Dallas Stars and the Boston Bruins. When I graduate I want to live in Boston. I chose futura because it's bold and simple yet easy to read.

BERRY, Times New Roman/ Birth of a Hero

Hi, my name is Chris Berry, and I chose Times New Roman just because out of habit really. During the glorious high schools days, all of my teachers required Times to the standard for all essay assigment, they say it made editing easier and what not; honestly it made harder to blow up the text to some obscure size to meet the page requirements. Ever since I've taken graphic design seriously I still use Times but only as a place holder for whatever assignment has my full attention. Honestly ever since I discovered dafont.com its hard label which font is my favorite, if I had to choose it would be Birth of a Hero in the eroded section of the website, that I try to use if given the chance. If you ever used this type before its not exactly the easiest font to use, but love it takes a simple San Serif font and just let it corrode, its great when you have project that's going in the direction of Steam punk, but not much else, well for now. When comes down to it, dafont.com just has so many choices the website itself is my favorite font until I can find one i can truly commit to.

MARASIGAN garamond

My name is Victorio Marasigan. I am a double major, in comm des and photography (DPI). I believe in Jesus. I write music. I'm half filipino.

I chose Garamond because it's a clean font and it's pretty diverse.

OLESEN, Arial

Hi, my name is Sarah Olesen. My major is Communication Design. I am not really sure what I want to do with it yet, but hopefully I will figure it out. I am from Pasadena, TX. I like to scrapbook, run, and take photos. I also have a dog named Sadie.

I chose the font Arial because it is simple, bold, and easy to read. I am a very organized person so I like how it looks really in order.

King, Arial

Hi! My name is Sarah Banning King. I was a painting major and now I'm a Com Des major. Yay! I chose this font because I use it all the time when working on the computer. It's easy to read. I use it on my art blog that I might let you see....

Embrey Futura

My name is Autumnn and I love everything about ComDes. At first, my chosen major was in mathematics. Now its something I hate.. to much memorization! My heart has always been in art so I am glad I found a profession I can incorporate it in. I chose Futura because its a nice basic type face without being to boring. I also like that it is a little more bolder then others.

FELDER Avenir

I’m Kim Felder. My major is Journalism, but my minor is Communication Design (and that’s the industry I plan to go into). Ideally, I would like to work in the production department of a magazine; last summer I interned in the production department of Texas Monthly which greatly influenced my perspective on publication design. My background is mostly in print publication and web design using InDesign and Dreamweaver. Before transferring to Texas State I attended the University of Texas at Dallas.

I’m usually Avenir, sometimes Gotham. Clean sans serif. It provides an open, uncluttered page in both print and web design.

First impressions

Morris - Bodoni

I am a ComDes major. I lived in Minnesota all of my life up until 2007. I love drawing. I was a professional belly dancer for 2 years, then ended up working as an admin. assistant for 9 years. Then did design and advertising for a catholic church for 3 years...it's been a strange life...can't wait to be done with school and use my creativity for a living!

Chose Bodoni cause it's attractive, basic and clean. I like a lot of fonts though, no fav's

MARCUM Baskerville

Hi, my name is Amberlea and my favorite font is Baskerville because it's clean and simple and has small serif details.

The reason I ended up in the Com Des program is actually because of my love of writing. I was involved in my high school's newspaper class and began really enjoying page layout design, and my love for design just grew from there.

I guess something interesting about me would be that I collect hands (well, representations of hands). Any material: glass, wood, etc. If I happen to find a hand at a garage sale or flea market, it's mine!

Boothby, Chalkboard

Hi! my name is Laura Boothby and I'm a comdes major. I choose Chalkboard because it looks like Comic Sans, but you said we couldn't use that one so I had to settle for chalkboard! I think Chalkboard is my favorite just because it is fun and bubbly like my personality.
Something interesting about myself is that I'm a big Colorado fan-Denver broncos, CO Rockies, and CO Rapids(I was born there so i have to represent)!

Brown(Jen) Gill Sans

Um... Hi. My name is technically Jennifer, but I go by Jen (with one N). I'm a junior here at Texas State and I previously have a degree in Photographic Technology with a consintration in Fashion and Advertising, so the idea of not opening Photoshop or using images in this class makes me a little uneasy.
I'm from the state of Maine and have lived in Austin for 6 years. I commute from South Lamar if anyone ever wants to carpool:)
I have a few other online endeavors including www.jenbrownimaging.smugmug.com and www.jenbrownimaging.blogspot.com.
Maggie is my dog and I will probably talk about her a lot. I look forward to hanging with ya'll this semester.
OH... FONT... I like gill sans because it's simple and I often dig using fancy/trendy scripts for big one-liners and filling in information with simple fonts... K.there.done.
(p.s. If there is a typo, I'm a bad speller)

Lee - Agency

My name is Markel Lee. I'm a Com Des major. I've been working on graphics since 2004. Currently I've acquired a position on campus as a designer for Off Campus Student Services and also freelance on the side. I'm from Dallas, TX born and raised. Started college at Prairie View A&M in the Architecture field. I wanted to become an Art major, so I transfered here to Texas State. Looking to learn more about Illustrator and InDesign will here in your class.
I choose Agency because I too have a thing for order and balance similar to architecture. I like the professionalism of the font and the structure. I'm well rounded when it comes to fonts but Agency is my primary font face.

Hartfield, News Gothic MT

My name is Amanda Hartfield and I am a Com Des/Photography double major. Basically that just means I couldn't decide what I wanted to do. I have Art A.D.D and it's kinda bad. I took Color Theory last semester and now I want to be a Painting major. I still don't know what I want to do. I was a International Relations major and it was fun for a second. I changed my major and I started out wanting to design but now I'm feeling photography more. It's a daily change.

I chose this font because I find it neat, clean and square. Usually something being square is a bad thing. In this case it is a good thing, for me at least.

NEWTON Trade Gothic

This is an example of how your post should be...

Hey. My name is Prof. Newton (You can call me Rose if you would like). This is my third year teaching at Texas State. I have been a graphic design professor for ten years now at several institutions (University of Houston, Savannah College of Art and Design, and The Art Institute of Houston). Prior to my teaching career I practiced graphic design for seven years in the oil and gas industry in Houston. My first graphic design job was with the Enron Corporation.

If you are interested in seeing some of my work and what I'm currently up to check out. www.rosenewton.com

I chose Trade Gothic because it's a good, reliable san serif font. Honestly, my favorite typeface depends on my mood. It'll be different every time.
