Filippov - Milton Glaser

Milton Glaser talking about graphic solutions to conceptual problems.
Glaser's most famous for his "I (heart) NY" ad campaign for New York City. You might have seen the T shirts...
He makes a couple of interesting points about concept in this interview; originality vs. efficiency. Confidence vs. embarrassment.
Riveting stuff from one of the most respected designers in the industry. Art is Whatever... Remains.

Piper_Shepard Fairey

I would love to embed the video I found to this post but the video uploader has prevented embedding. So, here's the link:

Shepard Fairey is a street artist who uses hand-made stencils and spraypaint to create unique graphic designs. Some of his most famous works, which he talks about in the intervies, include his Andre the Giant poster which is black and white except for the red "Obey" right underneath the face. Nowdays, his absolutely most widely known work is the iconic Obama "Hope" poster in red, off white, and blue.

Frey_Paul Rand

I chose Paul Rand because he is one of the classic graphic designers who inspires me. I love how he started out with humble projects and after several years of hard work and dedication built up his portfolio and created several major corporate identities such as: IBM, ABC, Westinghouse and UPS.

Davila_Graham Clifford

I found several interviews with designers from the Miller White School of Design on vimeo that have had an impact on me as a Communication Design student. One designer in particular who inspires me to become a better designer is Graham Clifford, the owner of Graham Clifford Design. He was trained by his father and after years of applying his craft with various advertising agencies he started his own design shop in New York in 1994. In this video he promotes education and encourages students to become immersed in their craft.

Koski_Ben Burtt

I Couldn't get the embedding code so here is the link to the video --->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A58fMkMo3cM&feature=related

The person I chose for this journal is Benn Burtt, who is a sound designer. The video shows some of his amazing talents of putting sounds of any kind into movies. In this video, you get to see a little bit of the life he lives and his library of sounds that he uses for the Pixar movie Wall E. He has also done sounds for movies such as Star Wars (1977), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, winning many awards.

Even though I don't know anything about sound design, I thought it was a very interesting video. It is always crazy how sounds are put into any movies because the designers can use what ever they can find around them to create something new. I think that is a great art and talent to be able to use objects and people around you to make your project successful.

Robinowich_Matthew Carther

I chose Matthew Carter because he is one of the classic, all time greats who has been able to evolve with technology. You see his work everyday even though you may not realize it. He has created the fonts used today for publications such as Time, Washington Post, New York Times, Boston Globe, Wired, Newsweek, and more. Some of his most popular typefaces are Veranda and Georgia.

Smith_Crouwel

Wim Crouwel is a Dutch typographer and graphic designer. He is one of the founders of Total Identity. His typefaces include New Alphabet, Fodor, and Gridnik. Later in his career he taught at various design schools. His work is sharp, grid-based, and rooted in the internatonal typographic style.

What really fascinates me about Wim and other designers of his time is that they had to deal with the beginnings of a major, global shift from traditional media to computers. It's also fun to see a type designer who tends to favor aesthetics over readability.

Matthew Carter is a famous type designer who started working with punch cut technology, but still proves himself relevant with modern type design technology. He is famous for making font families like Verdana and Georgia.

Couvillion: Jessica Hische

Jessica Hische is a designer from Brooklyn who decided to start a project called The Daily Drop Cap where she literally makes a drop cap each day.

Here is her website:

And just a small interview:

Menefee-Louise Fili

Specializes in logo, package, restaurant, and book design. She has received Gold and Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators and New York Art Directors Club.

Sikes_PhilippeApeloig

For my video I chose an interview with the French graphic designer Philippe Apeloig. He is well known for his posters and many of them can be found in MOMA. He has his own studio in Paris, France called "Apeloig." In the video he explains why he designed his posters the way he did. He also explains what inspires him, which I think is something we should consider as well.

Philippe Apeloig: A Master in the art of Typography

Armas - Philippe Apeloig

I chose this video of Philippe Apeloig because I really enjoyed his typography poster designs. I love how he made type into beautiful art pieces. He was born in Paris and is graphic designer who has a serious passion for typography.

Leal_Michael Riley

I chose this Michael Riley film because I think people overlook the art or the work that goes into the intro to movies often and in all reality it is a very important part of the movie. People can always tell exactly what movie they are watching just by the intro. When the animation and titling is interesting it draws the viewer in for the movie and play a big role in the success of movies with little credit to the hard work that is put into it.

I couldn't really figure out how to post the actual video.

Shine - Lawrence Weiner

Lawrence Weiner was a central person in the formation of conceptual art in the 1960s. He is famous for his works of typographic texts and creating gestures. In the 60s he spent 6 years making explosions in the California landscape to create craters as individual sculptures.

Gunter, Paula Scher

Paula Scher is an American graphic designer. She is known for illustrating with type in her designs, whether they be in posters or architecture. She is also well-known as the designer of the citi bank logo. She currently is a partner at the New York office of Pentagram, a prestigious independent design consultancy with offices also in Austin, London and Berlin.

I love this TED talk by Paula Scher because she makes it clear that no matter how successful she is, she never ceases to learn.
