Wallendorf Proj3 Roughs
With this first rough, I wanted my focus to be on a day that I was stuck in bed with the flu. Even though I'm sick, I still want to be able to get up and be productive. However, my body on this particular day decided otherwise. My alarm just kept beeping for hours and all I wanted to do was rest. I chose Helvetica because it didn't have a serif and was easy to read with all the different strokes. It also provides the possibility of being loud and quiet at the same time.
On my second rough, I wanted to base it more on my obsession with Sudoku. The schedule used for this rough was a class day and on class days I also wait tables in the evening. I'm going non-stop on those days and so to keep myself sane and relaxed, I always carry a Sudoku puzzle with me. It's a way to distract my brain from the constant thinking. I chose Helvetica for this rough as well because it's easy to read, has no serif, and because most Sudoku puzzles I've come across use that font.

The first image is an accurate portrayal of your description I believe. When you are that sick there really isn’t anything you can do but lay in bed as it consumes your day and all you’ve done is rest. I like where you placed snooze, my eye is drawn towards it as you follow the words down the page. However, I would play around with your placement a little, maybe push some of the beeps over a little more to better exaggerate their presence. Specifically the bottom and top “BEEP” the one on the bottom is a little awkward in the left corner where it kind of disappears, I would just push it over a little to the left so the line meets the corner. The on top might be better more towards the right so that the part where the angle at the base of the B doesn’t look so delicate against the edge of the paper. Also, maybe try playing around with your font size to show a little more variation. Nice concept!
ReplyDeleteThe second rough is also an accurate portrayal of your description, I like how you put your entire schedule in the shape of the puzzle, I don’t know much about them but everyone seems to be carrying them around these days. The type is a little hard to read all squished in like that but I think if you adjusted the spacing it would not have the same effect. Maybe if you tried making the type a little bit bigger it would be more legible. I would also like to see it go even more in depth and maybe instead of the dashes making up the different boxes you could have more single lines of type instead all criss crossing to make the grid, but that might be too busy so it would be kind of tricky. I think this is your better composition, and would stick with this one for your final, good job!
Your first rough is very visually intriguing to me. The varying size and weight of the word ‘beep’ works really well to convey the annoyance of the alarm in the morning. I like that the words also completely fill the frame, clearly portraying that feeling when an alarm infiltrates your dreams while you sleep and becomes all you can hear, consuming everything until it wakes you up. The only problem I have with this rough is the placement of snooze in the E. You could try lowering it or just messing with the placement in general, it’s hard to tell what would be better without seeing it.
ReplyDeleteYour second rough is creative, and captures the idea well since Sudoku puzzles are such a big part of your day. If you want the font to be more legible in your actual schedule, you may want to try spacing out the lines slightly. Perhaps to tie the dividing lines in more with the rest of the image, use small text instead of dashes. I feel like that disconnects the overall image.
