Carrillo Project 3 Rough

I went for the metaphor approach on this project. The shark conveys the typical events that cause a tedious day. It's fun, playful with a sense of melodramtic-ness. I decided on keeping a clean san serif type to compliment the drawing like the simple use of smooth stroke lines (waves). The first one has the exact same approach but with more details. While the second one strives for a cleaner and more coherent look.

  1. Your roughs convey a sense of being rushed and stressed, but are also humorous. The compositions have a good emotional balance. I think you used the font successfully because your images look like cartoons and would not have looked as animated with a serif. Your minimal approach looks cleaner and simpler but I like the top image better. I think the top conveys that your day is kind of spastic, and the use of more letters makes the composition more crowded which makes everything look more stressed. The word waves are going crazy all over the place in the top one and it makes me laugh but it also makes me sympathetic because I can relate to having a rushed morning and a tedious day, as I’m sure everyone else in your class will.

  2. Visually, I prefer your second rough (the one with fewer words) because the shark and fish are surrounded by more negative space and therefore emphasized. However, if you’re conveying the stress of the day, your first composition might serve that purpose better. I also like how your first comp is more personal and provides a schedule for your entire day as opposed to just the morning. Maybe if you added a few more sentences to cover your whole day to the second comp and put them above the fish it would keep enough negative space around the fish still but also be more personal with more information. I certainly feel the playfulness you’re going for in both of these! I think the font you chose helps with that too. Two small details I think you could fix would be the bubbles (since the fish is swimming away from the shark, the bubbles should show that motion) and “debrief” is spelled wrong on the bottom in your first comp. Other than that, good job!
