James Proj 3 Roughs

The two compositions are rather different. The first was the original idea I had - with tennis shoes. The second was something I thought of over the weekend - a tetris game. I'm having trouble with it though, in that I'm finding it difficult to make the words emulate the shapes, even with using 'L's to block them off just a bit and give a sense of boundary.

Both compositions were done in Futura font for the condensed and somewhat pointed look - the condensed good for the shoes since it conveys a sense of things being jammed together in a hurry (my Tuesdays and Thursdays are always like that) and for tetris it worked because it allowed for easy fitting of 'uniform' lengths, to a degree. I can get a general shape for each piece, but I need a way of blocking them off, I suppose, to make them look fully like the shapes.

At this point I, personally, am leaning more towards the tennis shoes as the final project.

  1. Your shoes are fantastic; they really capture the idea of having always having to run around, going here and there. The only thing I would try to work on is the negative space. Have you tried making the background black? Or what about some kind of shadow or muddy ground underneath the shoes so that they aren’t just floating in space. I’m a big fan of Tetris, and I think this concept works. You do need to define the shapes a bit more. The L’s on the end is a good start, have you tried a lower case l to define the rest of the shape? Also, the background behind the falling pieces could be dark; to separate the two sides more and so it looks like they are falling more in space. Either one will work but the tennis shoes design is the stronger of the two. Just work on the background and if it doesn’t change it for the better than go with what you’ve got.

  2. Wow, I am having a hard time deciding which one I think is a stronger composition. I would like to see the second one go a bit further, maybe a little more density with more words or symbols. You could use en or em dashes or parenthesis to create tetris blocks and put phrases inside them. The tennis shoes are a great way to present an image-based solution and the X’s for the laces are really strong. I would try to see what happens if the laces were untied though and just laying on the ground, so you could have lines of spiraly text to make the negative space more interesting. I think it would also lend to your concept, like your day is so crazy everything is coming undone…even your shoelaces. Either way, whichever one you decide, they’re both strong conceptually. I think you just need to pick which one you feel is stronger and push it a little further. Good job!

  3. Great use of type to form tennis shoes. Based on your description I’m not sure how the tennis shoes describe your day. You said your day feels like it is jammed together in a hurry. I do not really get that feeling from them. They don’t look like they are hurried. I don’t get the feeling that they are being jammed together either. Your picture could use a sense of movement. Make it look like they are physically being forced together.
The Tetris is a great idea. It’s clever. It perfect represents the feeling you described. Your shapes do need a lot of work. They don’t quite fit together perfectly like you would expect Tetris shape to do. Some of your lines are bigger than others and some of the shapes aren’t recognizable Tetris shapes. I don’t think you really need to use as much words inside the shapes as you did. Focus on forming the shapes first. There are plenty of other characters on the keyboard that would be useful in forming shapes like brackets, underscores and lines.
