Martinez, Project 3 Roughs

Both of my compositions are to tell about my VALENTINES DAY. Cheesy i know! However, the day was exciting and spontaneous so why not? My boyfriend Mark and I went to the San Antonio ZOO and saw so many animals (of course). One of my favorite animals was the RHINO! I gravitate more towards the larger gray animals, rhinos, elephants, and hippos which is why my image makes up the head of a rhino, symbolically.
After the zoo we went to the park just down the street to Brackenridge PARK and had a PICNIC. After that we went to the Witte MUSEUM and went into the HEB Treehouse. Later that day we went to eat BBQ at AUGGIES. All in all, it was such a fun day!

I would like to know your thoughts on which version of the Rhino you like better and some suggestions on how I could make it look better. I included the hearts in the second composition as well as added another rhino, to add to the Valentine theme. In your opinion is this too much, or do you have any suggestions of how I could include the Valentine idea?

I chose Myriad as my typeface because it gave me many options on the weight of the typeface, and I wanted to keep the type simple. It also provides round characters, and that helped for completeing the compositions.

  1. I like the concept. I prefer the second rough for this. I like the illustration. The type family you used was a good choice. I am having a little trouble with the center dot. I know it’s supposed to be the small horn (or lump?) on their head but I think you need to bring it out and make it more three dimensional like you did for the main horn. I think the composition looks very artsy and the hearts add a painterly feel to all the type which I like. I think that if you tried to do anything else valentine themed it could come across cheesy. I think the hearts on the second rough are a nice touch without going overboard. I also like the placement of the composition and I definitely wouldn’t change that. Overall I think the second rough is stronger and it just needs a little bit of tweaking. Also what a fun Valentine’s day! ☺

  2. Kristen, the second composition is my favorite because it conveys the Valentines Day feeling. I really like the shadows that you created with the words. I think that the font that you used is a good choice to illustrate the rhino heads. What I suggest about this composition is to increase the scale of the rhinos; maybe they can go off the page. Also the position of the rhinos, I think you should move them to the center. I would like to see more hearts or increase the scale of the hearts and some can go off the page too. Definitely, you need two rhinos instead of one to make your composition is really interesting and portray a lovely day.

  3. WOW! I love how cheesy it is! You did a great job on the composition of the rhino and I suggest you use the second rough, based on how Valentines Day went with your boy! I love how you made the hearts look fuzzy, giving it a warm enjoyment being with one another. I enjoy the way you made the face look like a sketch; you definitely balanced the face out well. I do think you could work on the eyes on both of the rhino’s, so that they stand out more. I would like to see more visual of what you guys did at the zoo maybe in the background? I definitely suggest you stay with the second composition, and I dig the way you differentiate between the female and male rhino. Overall, it has good balance and font choice, just work on the eyes a little more and it will be a complete composition.

  4. I do like the two rhinos more than just the one. I am not a fan of the hearts though. Maybe if were just one? I understand that it’s a rhino because of the horn and the ears, but the eye(?) is a bit awkward. Seems as though it’s a Cyclops rhino, haha. Just needs a bit of work. Also, from the images, I’m not able to read anything in particular. I’m sure it’d be easier in person though. That being said though, I really like the sense of depth that you’ve achieved. It’s really starting to look like a 3D object. I don’t think you’re quite finished. The white areas in the head seem too bright in comparison to the deep black on the bottom. As far as the second one, the placement in the square is a bit awkward. Seems like it should be lifted up. Just a bit more work and this will definitely be a nice piece.

  5. Martinez,
I remember seeing your composition last night and thought it was really amazing! These rhinos have insane detail to them. I prefer the second rough versus the first for the simple fact that there are two rhinos and hearts. It may sound cheesy, but it’s simple and conveys your message just right. I think you could get rid of that awkward little dot that is in the middle of the both rhinos’ faces. Also, I’m not sure you need to completely outline the rhinos with type. I think the type that makes up the rhinos is enough. That’s probably the only thing that I think really needs to be fixed with the composition. Great job!

  6. Kristen, cheese is never a bad thing. I think the second piece really drives at what you are trying to say about your day. I do agree with one of the other comments, though, that they do look like they have only one eye each, but that can be easily corrected. One thing I really liked on the first design that changed on the second was the outline of words going around the side of the head under the ear. The negative space gives the rhino depth and a more organic feel. Myriad was a good choice of font to use with all the different weights, although I would have liked to see it differentiate in the right rhino in the second design rather than just copying and flipping the left rhino. Other than that, the two rhinos in love really hit home on your idea of a perfect day at the zoo.

  7. I would definitely go with the second composition. I think it reads better for the Valentine’s Day theme. A few tweaks could be made to make it even better. I would make the two figures take up more of the white space. Maybe you could make the horns touch so they could look like they are kissing. Maybe show some kissing lips floating up with the hearts or have the word Valentine somewhere in the composition. You could have one saying to the other “will you be my valentine?” Also I think you need to make the eyes more distinguishable like googly eyes to give off the love affect. I wouldn’t fill their faces up with some much text. They look as if they have beards of hair. Or you could make one look like they have a beard (the guy), and one with a bow on their ear (the girl) this would make it look even more cheesy which would work. Overall, really cute design.

  8. Go with the two rhinos. The bottom jaws get lost which makes the rhinos difficult to make out. Rework the depiction of them. The style treatment is good. Continue with that to show dimension and shadow.
