Cardoza, Project 3 Ruffs

for this project, i chose to do it from the perspective of my cat, esteban. the randomness of his daily "activities" are contained within a thought bubble, illustrating that the day in the life of a cat is not structured, but rather spontaneous. most of the activities are animated or stylized to put emphasis on the moment or the individual task, and not the cat's day as a whole....because i'm sure a cat doesn't have a defined beginning and end to his "daily schedule".

I chose the helvetica font family, mostly for its diversity, but used the rounded face in particular for its playfulness. i wanted to convey a somewhat cartoony aesthetic with this project, because i chose a goofy-ass subject.

ps. this is very rough as i am now realizing because you can see some guetto-looking live outlines in the format i saved it in.

  1. Cardoza,
Overall it’s getting there. I like the Helvetica font that you are using. Good choice for illustrating the cat’s moods and activities. Just play with the placement of the text. I like the way you have some text rounded into the curves. I don’t really like the flaring lines above sunbathe. I feel it doesn’t harmonize with the rest of the composition.

  2. I really enjoy your font use. It’s extremely playful and I like the roundness of it. I think you hit the nail on the head with your concept about cats and their daily lives not being structured but free and I feel like your composition reflects that. I actually like the lines about sunbathe because you are trying to show an illustration which I think is great however I think you should try to illustrate other lines because that sun sticks out like a sore thumb. So maybe under litter you can put a whole bunch of periods to mimic litter? Or create a slice of pizza for the pizza line? I think there either needs to be more illustration or none at all. The composition feels unbalanced because the round forms of the cloud are full on the left and not on the right. Also the top left area lines are bolded so maybe you can choose a different style for either pounce or the sun’s lines? Other than that I really enjoy the playfulness!

  3. Cardoza,
First off, I want to say your concept is really fun! I like cats and can totally see this running through cat’s head. I think the font you used fits very well with this piece. The rounded text does add that sort of playful side to the composition. The word “pounce” is kind of hard to read. At first I read, “bounce” and then I realized that it said pounce, so you might want to tweak that so it’s more legible. I like the fact that the words on the composition aren’t spelled out correctly. It really emphasizes the fact that it’s a cat that is thinking these things. I’m not sure about the 3 and the c with the whiskers coming out of it. I like the idea of the whiskers, but each time I look at it, my mind tries to make out the outline of a cat’s head. Other than that, it think it’s looking really great =D

  4. I agree with the previous commenters, the playfulness is definitely achieved. I’m not entirely sure if I like the misspelling of words or not. It may because I tend to be a grammar police officer on my days off. I understand that it’s because it takes place in the head of a cat, but all the other words are correctly spelled out so it almost looks like a mistake. If you want to continue that theme, misspell more words rather than just those two (“sum snax” and “cheez”). The font is perfect. Might not be successful had you chosen a different one.
Also, my initial thoughts were the same as what Amanda (above} said. The rounded words on the left match up well, but nothing is happening to that effect on the left. Also, the top has some overlapping outside of the square, which you might want to fix. Maybe put something in the negative space underneath the O’s in “snooz”?
Will you be posting your second rough? I’m interested to see it.

  5. Karrisa, I really like your concept because is view from a cat perspective which is fun. Also I like the font that you chose and the design. I like that you use the typeface in so many different styles to convey each activity. I think you can still add more to fill the white space or have some balance because the top part seems heavier than the bottom. Definitely, keep the black background. I really enjoy your composition, it portraits how playful a cat can be.

  6. Karissa, love the concept. Being a cat person myself, I can completely relate to your design. I think Helvetica Rounded was a great choice for such a playful idea, and especially like the spelling of some words. The organization of the schedule reflects a lot of that spontaneity that cats thrive off of everyday. If I would suggest anything, it would be to move the thought bubble down just a bit, so the events of the day have a little more space to float around. Also, the word “Pounce” doesn’t quite read as easily as it should. Try to play with the point size to scale the letters and give it a sense of motion, just like you did with the dots that come before it. I understand the idea behind the “sunbathe”, but the text is a little hard to read. The sunbeams, in my opinion, work for the most part and somewhat look like a cat ear. Other than that, it’s a great start and look forward to the finished piece.

  7. I like the playfulness of this one. It is a little generic. Add a little more spunk to the composition. Cats are really dependent, as I have grown up with them. Try doing something with that. Or how they scratch the shit out of you just to play. I don’t know. Just make it more interesting. It is a good start, though. I’m not feelin the outline around the bubble.

  8. Good start. I'm thrown off by the whisker thing and popcorn center. Not sure what that is. You also seem to be hugging the curves on the left side only which makes the comp feel off balanced. Work on evening out the comp.
