Englert, Taylor Proj 3 Roughs

So my first idea is the basic of the basics. its still very rough but i love the idea. It's how it is every week here. lame weeks and awesome weekends. I'm not too sure what to add to it though.

My second idea is basically what i do everyday. the things that make me happy or keep me focused pretty much, and having that being interrupted by going to work in the middle of the day. it sucks, hence the bottles before bed. i have more ideas for this but this is what i put on paper for now.

  1. First Idea: I like the simple concept. It is very straight forward. That is its strength. Seems like it is missing something though. What font did you use? Perhaps a different font would make it more interesting. Try one with big serifs and ornate brackets and stuff. Since it is basically just two words, lame and fun, maybe you could make the font bold then fill in the actual letters with the words week and weekend. This might give the composition more of a presence. Just a thought.
Second Idea: The second idea is pretty interesting. You did a good job illustrating the bike, drums and bed using the font. I am not sure about the composition. Maybe you should think about moving the word work. Just move things around to make it more balanced.
I like the first idea the best. It’s stronger.

  2. First off for the first rough I really like your concept. It’s playful and you actually have to look at the text to get the real idea behind it. I also like the size difference between lame and fun. I think it is simple and for me simple works. It also works for your piece as well. I like the font but maybe you could try using a thick bold style and then put the words week and weekend in white inside the bolded letters? I think it could use a little more contrast. Maybe black background and white type? I really enjoy the idea though. As for the second one I think you did a great job illustrating with type. However the big negative space above work is bothering me for some reason. Maybe moving work up slightly or increasing the size? Overall I like the concept I just think the composition could be shifted a bit. Great job though.

  3. Taylor, I like your first composition better than the second one. But I think that you should convey the meaning of lame and fun. Maybe lame can be on the bottom and fun on the top and increase the scale of the word fun. Also you can show more contrast by adding more words to fun to make it look bold. I think you should try a typeface that has different styles, that way the word Fun can be bold and lame can be thin or condensed. Also I suggest using more words to describe why your week is lame and your weekend is fun. By adding more words you can use them as background for the word lame and change lame to white type. And the words that describe your weekend can spell fun. You have a good concept.

  4. I like the idea of the first one. I think you should definitely play with some different fonts. Lame should be something boring and plain and it should maybe be on the bottom of the page kind of small and squished. Where fun should be big and loud on top with a more fun font.

For the second one you did a good job with making the images. I especially like the bottles. But the composition itself isn’t that great. I think you should lose the beds and keep the bike, bottles and drums and maybe have them at the bottom with work in big bold letters just crashing down on your fun.

  5. I really really enjoy your first idea! I love the simplicity and bluntness. You get your point across and most human beings in America can relate perfectly. I’m not sure if it’s missing something or not. I think I really just enjoy it and am tickled by it just how it is. It might be a good idea to explore different fonts, but overall I think it’s great.

The second one confuses me a bit. I think it’s just so crowded and I don’t know how or where I’m supposed to start. If you go with this one maybe think about making work much bigger and squishing all the fun things. The objects look great and are creatively made. I think it’s just a matter of organizing them on the page so it’s readable.

Overall I think that your concept is interesting and extremely relatable to the audience.

  6. I immediately was drawn to your second composition. I am really interested in the negative space that is being created in this layout. I like that it includes image-based creations however, I am slightly confused, without the explanation, about what you’re trying to convey here. I am really into your little guy sleeping. I definitely see that right away. I also like the bicycle, very clever solution. I like the font you chose because I like the way that “work” looks. The beer bottle like images on the bottom I don’t really understand, I don’t get it…
The first composition, I am not fond of really at all. It feels a little last minute maybe, or like you liked the image based one more, so you didn’t really want to work with the other one.
In the image-based composition, I don’t like the way my eye goes to the bolded “O” in the middle though. I don’t think it carries enough importance to be that boldly large.

  7. The first one is interesting and true. I like how people can relate to it. I like how you used the words “week” and “weekend” to write out the words. You did a good job making the letters look exact and symmetrical. Although I feel like there is something missing and there should be more going on maybe embellishments to the word fun or something like that.
For the second one, I like how you did so many pictures. Most of your composition is images not really type, and I think that is unique and interesting. The images came out great and you can really tell what you are trying to make. I get the sense that work is interrupting everything you like to do, but I think people would get the point better if you made work fall upon everything you like to do. That would look more interrupted and sudden. I like both compositions though!

  8. Instead of writing fun and lame over and over again tell us what is fun and lame. Maybe you can combine the two and add the bike, bottles and drum set around "FUN".
