Klingaman_Proj 3 Roughs

I really like both compositions. They are both based on things that I am passionate about and the imagery came very naturally to me. For the first one, I chose bookman old style because it is simple yet elegant, which are two themes that go along with coffee and a date. I think the first one works, but something inside me still feels like its missing something or that there is too much negative space.
I chose rockwell for the second composition because it is big, bold and loud. Iv been playing guitar for about 5 years now and it has become a huge part of who I am and how I live my day-to-day life. Im trying to convey the bold loud quality of rock music. I think the second comp is good just the way it is but I'm open to suggestions.
The differences in the two comps are the quality of the type and the mood that I'm aiming for. Also the way that my daily schedule is arranged is chronologically different.

  1. I really like the coffee one best. It has great movement, and a sense of emotion that I am not getting from the other layout. The other one is nice too visually, but feels a little off balance because of the words streaming from the speaker.

I like that the coffee mug is not centered on the page, and the contrast in weights on the “steam” (words) really draws the eyes to that portion of the picture. If you felt like you needed to work on anything, you could play with making some shading on the mug, but it works for me as it stands.

If you wanted to keep working on the guitar I would suggest playing with some varying weights on the type to see if you can make some of it pop more, and find a more fluent way to address the noise coming from the speaker.

  2. I really like the second one (the guitar) because it’s more original than just the coffee and it makes a more personal statement about what you find important in life. You might want to try using Futura for the bold look, since Futura has fantastic spiky M and N (especially for loud rock music) it might prove to be more dramatic. The positioning of the elements in the second rough is really good too. It creates a full scene and fills the page completely while still creating enough motion to keep a viewer interested. The guitar is great, but maybe work with the sound waves in the background, they seems awkward just sticking out like that and all being so similar. Maybe have them swirling or have many more of them in a much smaller size. Or have dramatic variations in size of the wave as it expands into the white space.

I really like the second compositions best, because it is much more personal and does give the sense that you are passionate about music. I love how Rock N’ Roll is bolder than all of the other words; it jumped off the page immediately for me. I think you did a great job at making the outline of the guitar and I like the sense of movement portrayed by the words flowing out of the speakers. I just think it is a very clever and personal idea and I really have no suggestions or dislikes about it.

I like the first composition as well, however it doesn’t grab my attention as much as the second one. I do like the layout of this and how the coffee cup is to the left of the outline box. I like the font you chose to use; however the only thing I do not really care for is how big you made “love”. It just sticks out to much I think and causes me to keep looking at it rather than the rest of the picture as a whole. I like the curves of the letters and the flow of the words making up the steam, as well as the tones you made with the layering of words and letters.

I would go with the second composition for your final

  4. I feel like what you need is more variation. Everything is just too static to me. Try using some bolder type, and maybe some larger letters here and there. To me, both of your designs just seem kind of simple and incomplete.

Don’t be afraid to put some big bold letters in there! You should try to be more expressive, rather than literal with your designs. I feel like if you let loose and have some fun with these, they will end up much better. Be confident.

If I were to choose favorites, I’d pick the coffee. Maybe it’s because I had a similar thumbnail, or maybe it isn’t. Who knows? Maybe I just love coffee so much that it creates a bias. I like the steam, and how the letters are disappearing and breaking apart at the tips. Work with it and see what you can accomplish.

  5. these are very calm and well rendered pieces. i like the guitar one the best, but make the type a little bigger because i cant really see it. i also enjoy the coffee because engages all the senses. maybe you move the coffee cup lower and let the steam flow to the top. both pieces could use bigger, bolder font because the text is kinda hard to read. the guitar piece looks like something out of a magazine and i think you stick to that one. it has a very clean feel and works best with out subject.

  6. Very nice, clean designs!

I'm actually not sure which one I like best. I like the coffee (I love coffee as well!) and I like how you laid it out and there's nice movement in the steam that maybe you could push a little further, make it more dramatic and swirly.

I like your idea for the guitar, but it does seem off balance. I think it would be cool if you made some of the text bigger and bolder to look like it was sound coming out of the amp. And the only suggestion I have about the composition is to maybe have the guitar sitting upright.

  7. The problem with the guitar comp is that there is no focal point or visual hierarchy. Everything is weighted the same. With the coffee there is a focal point with "love" floating off the top. I would go with that because of those reasons.

Your steam seems excessively long and tall. Perhaps shorten your phrasing so that the word "love" has more negative space to float into at the top.
