Marcum, Project 3 Roughs (Repost)

My images showed up pixilated on my last post so I decided to try again....

My main idea for these two roughs is that none of my days are strictly scheduled or planned out and I have lots of choices I make through out the day and a pretty loose schedule overall.

The first design is supposed to represent me going through the decision making process, such as should I sleep in or should I wake up and make coffee. And it gets smaller as I go through my day so that it shows progression.

The second design is supposed to represent my "loose" and "free" schedule with the things I do during a typical day scattered around in no particular order.

I used Palatino because I really like this font, and I use a lot of bold and italics which I think is a good font to utilize those with. IT also looks really good when the kerning is spaced really far, which I used a lot as well.

  1. Both of these are visually interesting. I like them both a lot because I feel like some days I have one of these sort of rigid schedules and I also have one just very loose one. The first is interesting because it branches off into different options. I can really relate to the “should I wake up early and eat breakfast or just wake up and immediately go to class.” The bracket arrows definitely direct a path that’s easy to read and comprehend. I like the sun also. The second idea is really cool because although its scattered and loose, the parenthesis keep it contained so your eyes don’t fly of the page. Also, the wake up and sleep outside of them is clever. I know the font is the same but the way you changed from bold to italic to all caps to wavy lines gives the image a diverse, loose feeling. Both are a great start.

  2. Amberlea, I really enjoyed your designs, especially the first one. It definitely captures the thought process that goes through the day, and I admit I can identify with it. I like the playful touches, such as the “sleep, sleep, sleep” and “wheee!” in italics, which separates them from the more important tasks during the day. Palatino is a good font to use because it can be laid back and studious at the same time. The shift in point size is a nice effect, showing the day winding down till you go to sleep. The overall composition does seem slightly crowded, but then again, that might contribute to how your schedule might be.

When I first saw your second design, I immediately thought of a washing machine and all the different elements spinning and jumbling together. They have no predetermined path, yet always wind up in the same place towards the end. The parenthesis on each side definitely keep this hectic schedule under control, but I’m not completely sure that Palatino was the best choice. For an unorganized composition, maybe a font with more typestyles and weights to differentiate the events from each other might have made everything stand out more. Overall, both pieces work quite well.

  4. I really enjoy the simplicity of your ideas and they come across clearly.

I like the first one more because it’s interactive as a viewer. I get to go through and experience the decision process with you. It reminds me of a magazine spread where it takes you through yes or no questions and leads you your style or personality….the point again is that it’s interactive and it automatically draws the viewer in. I like how you curved the line with “ride my bike” because it depicts the flowy-ness of your schedule… maybe you could play with that a little more. Lastly for this one just be careful with messiness. The viewer could get distracted with just trying to figure out how to transition from thought to thought if it gets too cramped.

I like how the second one is simply organized, but it just doesn’t interest me as much. I also feel like your thoughts are being compressed and confused with in the parenthesis rather than having that loose feel.

    Nice ideas overall!

  5. Amberlea, first of all no drawn elements allowed type only. Second I like where your heading with the decision making composition, but its seems too indifferent. For example with your wake up and the “snooze and sleep” various in the stroke weight and font size would really open this piece up.

  6. Very interesting. I like the flowchart; it’s my favorite of the two. My roommate made a similar one, but his was a little tighter and didn’t flow like yours. I think the concept is neat. With things of this nature, there are a lot of possibilities and compositions. I think it’s all about playing with it till you are truly satisfied with the design. I’d play around with it for a while.

The second is a little less clever to me. I think I get it, but I don’t know. It just seems pretty usual and less interesting.

All I really think you need is some time to maybe see what other possibilities can come of these ideas.

    Good work with these!

  7. Amberlea,

#1 ) I like this. I think it definitely illustrates the decision-making process that one goes through during the day. One thing, maybe you could add more options. I think that would really drive the point of a sort of spontaneous, but organized schedule. I think the font works well, but I’m not sure if the “ride my bike” part needs to be sloping downward; it’s the only one that as an animated quality to it and sort of sticks out. I would leave it italic, but make it straight.

The second one isn’t working for me as much. It does make sense…the idea of a free flowing and unstructured day confined within waking up and sleeping. It’s a little confusing to read.. (ex: hang out with friends is broken up and reflecting itself…) I think that if the contents of the parentheses had a different layout…maybe a spiral or fan of text of some sort would make this one a little more successful.

  8. The flowchart works the best. Work with making a more dramatic scale shift from the beginning of the day to the end. You do have a shift but in the middle it gets to be kind of all the same size. The end "sleep" can go all the way down to 7pt size then gradually go up in size from there to the largest "wake up"
