Larson, Proj. 3 Roughs

My idea in depicting a single day of my life is part of the fact that is is one of many other days that ultimately is part of a "bigger picture". So, hopefully you can tell that I'm magnifying a certain day within the big picture. I chose Futura for the font not for a particular reason other than it allows me to fit "picture" in the 8X8 box. I have also thought about doing the same idea with the word "LIFE". Another idea I had was to have a puzzle peiece coming off of the big word as if each day makes up a bigger whole (like a puzzle). Finally, the R is not supposed to be blank...I don't know what happened there, but it gave me another idea to maybe leave some of the last letters blank as if there were days still left to be written in the future.

  1. Katie, I like the second composition the best, The way you blew up the word picture an have it at an angle works better than the first composition where you just wrote it straight across. One problem that I see is maybe you should change the word you have. Instead of the word “picture” maybe you could change it to “life”, like you mentioned, or “day” or something else. I think unless without your explanation, the viewer might have a hard time seeing that you are going for the “big picture” effect. I would keep the magnify glass; I like how it blows up a part of what is going on with your schedule. Go back and try out different words and remember how this project is supposed to be about a day in your life. Oh, also I would turn the magnify glass handle at a different angle than the word, just to give a picture more of a moving feeling, or to make it look like it just isn’t stuck on there perfectly. I would stick with the magnify glass concept rather than the puzzle piece idea.

  2. Katie, very nice, I love the magnifying idea, very clever. The thing is, I can’t decide which layout that I prefer…I am leaning toward the top on…no pun intended…
The type seems to have more weight, and I actually prefer the all the letters being type rather than the R being white. I would say focus on the 1st one. There does seem to be tons of white space, but I am not sure if that is good or bad when I am looking at it. You don’t want to add too much and detract from the important part of the composition. Have you tried putting the word further down on the picture plane, maybe just a little closer to the bottom of the page…something to try? Other wise as a whole, I am going with the top rough. It is the strongest piece, and the angle on the magnifying glass works on that one too.

  3. Katie, I feel both compositions work very well. I am leaning more towards the second piece and the idea of the empty letter leaving room for what may come in the future. The slight rotation of the word gives it the impression that life is not always a straight line or can sometimes be an upward slope, increasing in difficulty as the week moves on. The simple idea of everything in your day coming together to form a whole, or bigger picture, is very smart and easy to understand. A small part of me wants to see another word besides “Picture”, but in this case might be the best choice for the message you are trying to convey. Your font choice works since it is a very clean font and easy to read, even at small sizes. The bold typeface fills in the negative space effectively when you zoom out to see the entire composition. My only suggestion would be to explore what else can be done with the outlined “R”. It seems to stand out a bit too much and somewhat detaches itself from the rest of the letters. Perhaps you could try outlining the letter with words describing your idea of future events? Other than that, I think it is very effective. Good job.

  4. This is awesome. I love type inside of type. The magnifying glass is very creative. The first idea is good but it’s the same as the second. That’s definitely okay but the second holds more weight and is more visually interesting. You said something about doing the same thing but creating the word LIFE. To me, that would be really great because when you see the word life and your daily schedule inside, it’s instantly understood. It took me a little while to get why picture was in there. When you explained I got it and its creative but I think life would be really cool to do. And with the second R being unintentional, I think it should be intentional. Like you said your life’s not complete and that shows it very well. I like these a lot and I think you have a few great ideas you should try out.

  5. I really like your concept and your other ideas. The execution on both designs is terrific. I see the second design as more dynamic of the two. It’s bigger and so conveys the “big picture”. The magnifying glass is great, I really like that and the way the type is readable through it! The second design is bigger and therefore more readable.
Your idea of blanking out some of the letters seems like it would work really well. If you do blank out the letters try magnifying the last corner of the last letter filled with type. That way the viewer would always read this design as if it is magnifying “today” the day it is being viewed.
This really is a great idea and communicates very well. The second works better of the two for me mostly because “picture” is bigger, horizontal might work great too if it was not housed in a square…but you could try that outside of this project.

  6. Very clever idea, I like it a lot.

I'm actually leaning more towards your first design, I think it feels more balanced to me.

I do like your idea about having some of the letters not all the way filled up to represent the future...maybe you can have the "E" at the end only partially filled. Sometimes we come across happy mistakes that lead to great ideas.

If you do decide to go with the second design, I would suggest putting the magnifying glass at an angle like you have in the first design because I think that gives it a little more emphasis.

  7. "picture" by itself really doesn't make sense. Use "life" or add "the big.." with picture. The angled comp is more dynamic. Use that setup but work with the big word. If you choose to leave some empty make sure you have one partly filled then the others after empty to imply future.
